The pistol dagger is undoubtedly one of the most unusual weapons in history. Combining two very different types of weapon in a single piece, it was once valued for its distinctive design and versatility. In this article, we explore its unusual history and most characteristic features.
What is a dagger pistol? History and features
A pistol dagger is a hybrid weapon made up of two main elements. The first is a dagger: a short bladed weapon with a flat blade and pointed tip, positioned in size somewhere between a sword and a smaller stabbing knife. The second element is a small pistol. In Spanish, the traditional term cachorrillo was sometimes used to describe particularly compact firearms of this type. In English, they would generally be described as small pistols or pocket pistols.
The exact origins of the pistol dagger remain uncertain. However, it is thought that examples may date back to 17th- and 18th-century France, where this type of combined weapon became particularly associated with the period.
The pistol barrel was attached to the handle alongside the steel blade, with the trigger positioned beneath it. It was generally designed to hold a single shot, while its configuration could make it difficult to cock the firing mechanism. This limited practicality helps explain why these weapons were never especially widespread and why relatively few original examples survive today.
