Although duelling customs changed considerably from one historical period to another, the rules of duels to the death<\/strong> often shared certain basic principles. Most frequent rules in duels with pistols<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout history, duels could be fought over questions of honour or even as a form of entertainment among the upper classes. They were traditionally fought with European duelling swords and, from the 17th century onwards, with pistols. At a time when personal honour and reputation carried enormous weight, insults, slander or even misunderstood jokes could sometimes lead to a formal challenge. When the law was considered unable to settle such disputes, a duel to the death could be seen as the ultimate response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counting steps and firing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In this type of duel, the two opponents could begin standing back to back. From there, they would walk an agreed number of steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They could then turn to face their opponent and fire. According to some traditions, the number of steps was even linked to the seriousness of the offence: the greater the insult, the shorter the distance. In other cases, the seconds accompanying each duellist were responsible for establishing the starting positions and conditions of the duel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternate shots or a whistle signal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once a signal was given, often with a whistle, the duellists could turn and fire. Under other sets of rules, shots were exchanged alternately, sometimes with the offended party being allowed to fire first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
